Welcome to the Hāwera Hospital pages. Hāwera Hospital offers a comprehensive health service. The sun filled hospital includes inpatient beds with private ensuites, four maternity beds and a fully equipped birthing room. A 24-hour emergency department provides emergency services. Hāwera Hospital offers outpatient and community services including mental health, district, allied health and public health services. The new $7.9M Hāwera Hospital opened to patients in March 2002 and was formally opened by the Prime Minister Helen Clark on 19 June 2002.

Dental
District Nursing Services
District nursing services are provided from the hospital and health centres in Hāwera, Stratford (including Opunake), Patea and Waverley.
District nursing services support people to stay in their own community by providing nursing services in the clients' own home, or on an ambulatory basis if the needs can be managed in a cost-effective manner in these locations.
Services include:
General and specialist nursing including complex wound care, (including chronic and recurring wounds)
IV therapy
Enteral therapy, continence and stomal care.

General Practice (The Practice)
The South Taranaki Rural Health General Practice (The Practice), located at Hāwera Hospital, is a modern service run by a team of senior skilled clinicians such as general practitioners, nurse practitioners, practice nurses and rural/urgent care doctors.

Hawera Emergency Department
The Emergency Department (ED) at Hāwera Hospital is run by a highly skilled staff trained in specialist emergency care.
People presenting at the emergency department is seen in order of priority for medical attention, rather than order of arrival. This is a process known as triage.
The ambulance bay and reception areas are monitored by closed-circuit television to help keep staff and patients safe.

Hāwera Inpatients
Hāwera Inpatients is a 20-bed medical, and assessment treatment and rehabilitation ward which uses an interdisciplinary approach working holistically to improve patient outcomes.

Housekeeping
Hāwera Hospital Housekeeping department provides a range of non-clinical services throughout the hospital.
Some of the aspects the department is responsible for include:

Mental Health
Community Mental Health is a secondary mental health service based at Hāwera Hospital. Our dedicated registered health professionals offer support to whaiora/people in the community with moderate to severe mental illness. People are referred to the service from via their GP or the mental health assessment team.
The service works alongside non-government organisations to provide services that support people with a mental health condition to live well.
If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health concerns, please see your general practitioner (GP) in the first instance or contact the mental health assessment team on (0508) 292 467.
Outpatients Department
The outpatient department covers clinics for specialties.
It is a developing service, and we are working to offer greater access and more specialty clinics to reduce the need for the South Taranaki patients to travel.
