STIs are common and may have few or no symptoms. 1 in 2 sexually active people will get an STI by the age of 25 — most will not know.

Sexual abuse assessment and treatment services (SAATS) offer free and confidential medical service for those who have been sexually assaulted or abused recently or in the past. Our care is available for people of all ages from Waitaki to Stewart Island.

A specialist sexual assault medical service can make sure you are okay after you have experienced any type of sexual violence (past or present) and help deal with any concerns you may have about your health.
You will be offered a forensic sexual abuse examination, even if you are unsure if you will report it to the police. This kit will be stored for up to 3 months while you make your decision. If you do not go to the police, this examination will help you by providing medical care, support and advice and access to ACC-funded counselling.
Even if it was years ago, many people will still benefit from seeing a specialist service.
