Childrens Ward - Ward 2
The Childrens Ward takes 12 patients, from newborn babies up to children aged 15. We have a mixture of medical, surgical, orthopaedic and oncology patients. Some of our patients are long-stay and others are surgical day cases.
We admit from all over Taranaki, 24-hours-a-day. We also have a paediatric outpatient clinic four mornings a week.
Our staff includes a clinic nurse whose duties range from cathetars to administering chemotherapy. Our paediatric District Nurse meets families in the hospital environment and visits them in their homes if necessary. We have paediatric consultants who are supported by registrars and house surgeons. We also have input from other departments.
Families are welcome to the ward and one parent for each child is encouraged to stay and participate in the care of their child.
Schoolroom and play therapy
Patients who are in for less than 10 days do various worksheets with the teacher and our play specialist. If they are in for longer than 10 days, work from their own school will be organised and our teacher will supervise and use her resources. The Play specialist has a huge role to play in preparing children for theatre through the use of photos, dolls and discussion.
Visiting hours:
Open visiting for immediate family / caregiver only. General visiting 2pm to 8pm daily. Visitors are asked not to visit if suffering from an infection and to avoid visiting during the tea period, 5-6pm.
