Return to Nursing

Registered/Enrolled Nurses - opportunity to return to practice

Whether it has been five years or twenty-five years since working, nursing needs you!

Taranaki District Health Board’s Nursing Reconnect programme offers ‘out-of-practice’ registered nurses, who hold New Zealand registration, the opportunity to update clinical skills and boost their confidence to return to work back in a clinical setting.

Since the introduction of the Health Practitioners Competency Assurance Act (2003) registered nurses who have been out of practice for five years or more are now required to show the Nursing Council of New Zealand evidence of competence and professional development in order to obtain their practising certificate and re-enter the workforce. TDHB’s Nursing Reconnect is an approved competency based programme from the Nursing Council of New Zealand.

This 6-12 week programme is an excellent opportunity to upskill and return to nursing either on a full time, part time, or casual basis.

Registered Nurses who have trained overseas and wish to gain New Zealand registration

Taranaki District Health Board’s Nursing Reconnect programme offers overseas registered nurses, wishing to gain New Zealand registration, the opportunity to undertake a Nursing Council approved competence assessment programme. This 7-12 week programme is an excellent opportunity to gain experience nursing in the New Zealand environment.

Both programmes

Nurses are matched to a senior nurse mentor for their clinical placements, which take place throughout a variety of settings, including mental health, at Taranaki Base or Hawera Hospitals. Additional courses will be run through out the year dependent on interest.
