District Nursing

District Nursing Services are provided from the hospitals and health centres in New Plymouth, Waitara, Stratford (includes Opunake), Hawera and Patea (includes Waverley).

District Nursing Services support clients remaining in their own community by providing nursing services in the clients' own home, or on an ambulatory basis if the needs can be managed in these locations in a cost effective manner.

Services include general and specialist nursing including complex wound care, (including chronic and recurring wounds), IV therapy and enteral therapy. Other specialist nursing services (continence, stomal and palliative care) are covered by separate service specifications.

District Nursing and Palliative Care services are provided in Urenui by the Urenui and Districts Health Centre, in Mokau and in Inglewood by Hauora PHO .

Stomal Therapy and Continence Nurses based at New Plymouth and Hawera provide specialist resource input to the health centres, inpatient areas, and other health professionals as required.

Hospital at Home is also provided in New Plymouth and other areas on a case by case basis.

Palliative care is provided by Taranaki DHB District Nurses in Stratford and Patea and in Hawera on a relief basis.

Health centres at Waitara, Stratford, Opunake and Patea provide outpatient clinics for visiting Health Professionals and volunteer health groups/ government services.

The Home Support Unit co-ordinates home help, meals on wheels and personal care services.
