Taranaki Hospitals Historic Society

Background

Taranaki Hospitals Historic Society was incorporated on 25 October 2002 and the inaugural Annual General Meeting was held in December 2002. Prior to incorporation, a steering group was established, with the aim of preserving and protecting the historic material, archives and memorabilia currently stored in the Taranaki Base Hospital basement and other health centre and hospital locations, creating a formal archive and museum.

Where are we?

The archives and society office are located on level 3, through the  Audiology Department, at Taranaki Base Hospital.

The society was allocated rooms at the hospital to establish an archive and museum. Volunteer effort has seen these rooms transformed into suitable premises for a working archive, under guidance from staff of Taranaki Museum.

Funding and Donations

Members pay an annual subscription of $10 per year, covering administration and general costs.

With the completion of New Plymouth's new museum and library, a large quantity of appropriate shelving was acquired from the temporary library premises in Devon Street, New Plymouth. TSB Trust has also contributed $250 towards the cost of installation and additional materials required for shelving.

The Society will establish a formal catalogue of all materials held and this information will be linked to our local museum and to the National Register of Archives and Manuscripts. Two committee members, Pat Radford and Virginia McClennan, have undertaken training in the use of the National Register of Archives and Manuscripts (NRAM), to enable our records to be added to the national index.

The cost of a computer system, linked to Taranaki DHB's network, scanner and CD writer were met by the Taranaki Health Trust Fund.
